Great competition from the 2016 Compete Internationals

The Compete Internationals is the only world level tournament on the West Coast for the North American Sport Karate Association (NASKA). With some great competitors in the area, a unique mix of competitors were in attendance at the event that took place February 23-25, 2016 in Ontario, California.

Californians dominated in fighting at the event. Team All Stars managed to win all four of the grand championships for men’s weight classes. Robbie Lavoie won the light weight grands, Jack Felton won the welter weight title, Leon Jefferson won for middleweights and Raymond Daniels was the heavyweight champ. For the two overall titles, Jack Felton defeated Robbie Lavoie and Jefferson bowed out to Daniels. In the women’s competition, there was controversy as Drew Beatty managed a painful looking head stomp to opponent Melanie Ortiz in the grands. In the end, Beatty was the overall winner and the women’s sparring grand champion.

New York’s Sammy Smith continued her impressive debut in the adult divisions with two overall wins in women’s weapons and forms. In men’s traditional form, young Ariel Torres was impeccable on the stage with his win. Colorado’s Tyler Weaver was the men’s CMX forms overall winner. In men’s weapons, Shahin Jahan-vash was crowned champion.

The kids were competitive but there can be only one. Aidan Kennedy was impressive in 13 & under forms with his crazy tricks. Derek Meegan, hot off double overall wins from the AKA event in January, was the 14-17 overall weapons winner. Allen Davies got one perfect 10 and his first overall grand championship title as he won the 14-17 forms grand championships. New Team JPM member Jake Presley was the overall 13 & under weapons grand champion.

Team Amerikick/AWMA brought Emma Teo and Kieran Tamondong together to win the synchronized forms title at the event. Jake Presley took home a second title as he spun his bo with Jackson Rudolph for the synchronized weapons title.

The weather was great and the competition strong at the 2016 Compete Internationals. A great start to the year for competitors and the first of the new NASKA Triple Crown tour.
